The idea behind psycloptix, essentially began
with knoppix a bootable rescue disk, that has
much more to offer then just repairing from a crash ...
I'd been to many show case events, and noticed many small business' competing, and trying to utilize there space and time the best they can. Many had flat panel monitors or projection televisions, which were used to a certain degree. Some always on a movie, some were elaborate settings for people to witness a show, if there were not people sitting in the area then there was nothing playing. I figured even though people wouldn't be enticed by a show running and watching from when it is in the middle of the tape, so make something easy enough to switch the monitor over to, which would allow for some interaction i.e. mouse and links, some key input possibly, but also a way to collect data through email forms, and even as a way to generate sales with the use of a shopping cart with a mysql backend and all running from a DVD.
So I had been wanting to remaster knoppix for sometime, and have been able to work with more or less some degree of success with earlier versions. I hadn't had my brain storm yet though. Psycloptix I thought also would be rather excellent in the case of an emergency which with Katrina I read online many place needing a custom kiosk service set up on the fly, I found that libraries also are in need of kiosks. I hope this can be of great help to anyone who needs a base for there kiosk with limited function as far as access to programs. I've not taken any further steps to control security, but it would be a simple matter of taking away priviliges and giving root a password
Since knoppix gave me something to work with, I'm giving back with the spirit of linux in mind. Anyone that is interested in it's use take it, if you have questions email to the contact at the bottom of the index page at http://www.xtux.com. The knoppix FAQ will be of importance to you as well. When remastering you need to copy KNOPPIX2 PSYCLOPTIX2 into your source directory.
If your interested in a burned DVD it will be $15 + postage. If your interested in having a site set up on the disk, shopping cart, video clips etc ... then I'd need to be contacted. !!Good Luck & Happy Hacking :-)   Back to Index
